Khovsgol province in the
north of the country is the ideal place for
a trekking holiday in Mongolia. There are no roads
in the Khoridol Saridag mountains, so we
hike using pack horses to carry the bags and equipment.
Walking up on the high mountain ridges above the
beautiful Lake Khovsgol, we get magnificent
views right up to the border with Siberia. There
are dramatic geographical features, and the
mountains appear white due to the phosphate
in the rock. During the summer months the wild flowers
are gorgeous, and the landscape varies as we climb
to higher altitudes above the tree level. Being
a National Park, this area is protected and
you may walk considerable distances without meeting
anyone. Families of Darkhad people, an ethnic minority
group, live in the area, as well as the Tsaatan
reindeer herders. |

Our
Tour Grading |
|
 |
A trek in
the Khovsgol region of northern Mongolia is classed
as moderate. Some of the climbs are quite
steep and often we walk where there are no footpaths
or tracks at all. On trek all nights are spent camping
in Western style tents, but by the lakeside we stay
at a traditional ger camp. Based on this itinerary,
the daily walking distance is 10-15 km, but
this is a tailor-made tour and can be adjusted to
suit your walking ability.

Lake Khovsgol...
|
 |
 |
 |
 This
inland sea, known to the locals as Mother
Ocean is the focus of life in the Khovsgol
region of northern
Mongolia. It is the deepest lake in Central Asia
and contains 2%
of the world's fresh water. Lake Khovsgol is considered
geologically to be the younger sister of Lake
Baikal, situated 200km to the north-east,
as both were formed by the same rifting forces.
There are plenty of fish in the lake, including
Baikal Omul,
Lenok, Umber,
Siberian Grayling and River Perch,
but Mongolian people are not in the habit of eating
fish.
