   TREK CENTRAL MONGOLIA

Khorgo Volcano & White Lake National Park

This hike in Arkhangai Province of Central Mongolia offers trekkers the chance to enjoy Mongolian mountain, steppe and desert landscapes, and to meet nomadic families along the trek, living a lifestyle little changed since the days of Genghis Khan. Volcanic activity thousands of years ago created dramatic geographical features. You can climb a volcano and hike around the crater , relax in outdoor hot mineral baths on the edge of the forest, play in golden sand dunes, and travel by yak and cart to see ancient sculptures of the Central Asia region. Whilst trekking in Mongolia you are sure to be invited into the homes of local people who will offer you airag (fermented horse milk) and other delicacies. Accommodation outside Ulaanbaatar will be in traditional ger camps. In the very remote areas you will camp in Western syle tents.

Khorgo Volcano...

Khorgo Volcano ©HikeMongoliaWhen the Khorgo volcano last erupted, some 20,000 years ago, it issued torrents of lava which blocked the Terkh River and created the beautiful lake of Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, or "White Lake". From the top of the extinct volcano, at an altitude of 2240 metres above sea level, one can view the full extent of volcanic activity, and can look (or even scramble) down into the 100 metre deep crater. From here the Suman river flows through a thick cover of basalt lava to join the Chuluut river where a fault 30km long has formed a dramatic river canyon.
