Total Eclipse & Mount Kharkhiraa Trek 2008

On 1st August 2008 there will be a total eclipse of the sun. One of the best places in the world to view this unusual phenomenon is western Mongolia, not far from the end of our Mount Kharkhiraa trek in Uvs province.  We have timed the trek to coincide with the eclipse.

Uvs is a spectacular region encompassing permanently snow-capped mountains, glaciers, torrential rivers, salt-water and freshwater lakes, sand dunes and a variety of rare animals and plants. The local people use camels and horses as working animals,  and our guides will bring their camels to carry all the luggage and equipment as we hike from one camp to the next.a

  Our Tour Grading

This 6 day trek in the remote mountains of Western Mongolia requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. The daily walking distance is approximately 15km, and there is one high passes to cross at 2600 metres above sea level. Luggage and equipment are carried by pack animals (camels and horses), and all nights on trek are spent camping in Western style tents.

Kazakhs of Mongolia...

Kazakh nomadic family ©HikeMongoliaThe Kazakh people have lived in Central Asia for hundreds of years, and constitute a considerable ethnic minority in the western provinces of Mongolia.Their appearance, religion, language and culture are quite different from the Kalkh Mongols. The Kazakh gers are taller, wider and richly decorated with felt carpets and wall hangings showing geometric, zoomorphic and cosmogonic motifs. Even their horses saddles are not the same.
