The remote snow capped peaks of Khovsgol province are the setting for a truly wild and adventurous trek in Northern Mongolia, where you will be delighted by the unspoiled beauty of this vast and varied country.

Khovsgol is without doubt one of the most beautiful and accessible parts of Mongolia. Water from Lake Khovsgol is so pure that you can drink it. The shores are surrounded by forests and flower filled meadows, and along the western side lie the dramatic Khoridol Saridag mountains. This five day trek along the lake shore and up onto the mountain ridges offers magnificent views and great hiking. There may be opportunities to meet local nomadic people and observe their ancient lifestyle.

The daily walking distance is 10-20 km, with some fairly steep up and downhill sections. The trek is suitable for anyone who is fit and takes regular exercise. The luggage is carried by pack horses and the local staff will cook and set up camp each night during the trek.



  • DAY 1

    Arrive in   'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel.

  • DAY 2

    It is a one and a half hour flight to Moron, then a further five hour drive north to   'Lake Khovsgol'. So it is quite a long journey to get to the remote and beautiful start point for this trek. Overnight ger camp by the lake.

  • DAY 3

    Start trek with a steep climb to reach the pass at an altitude of 2435 meters, from where there are magnificent views of Lake Khovsgol and the   'Khoridol Saridag' Mountain range. Descend from the ridge and along a narrow valley to reach the campsite. Overnight camping outdoor.

  • DAY 4

    Trek along a rough jeep track along a lush green valley. Climb over a pass and down into the remote   'Yamaat River' Valley where we camp beside the river, surrounded by high mountains. Overnight camping outdoor.

  • DAY 5

    Hike up a rocky hillside to reach the summit of Ikh Uul mountain at an altitude of 2961 metres. Descend gradually into the Mongoliin Gol valley and camp beside the river with marvelous views to the north of   'Uran Dush' (tabletop mountain). Overnight camping outdoor.

  • DAY 6

    Trek along a mountain stream and up a narrow horse trail to reach a pass (altitude 2457 meters) from where there are beautiful views of the mountain range. Hike down into the valley and through the forest to   'Ongolog Nuur'. Overnight camp beside the lake Khovsgol.

  • DAY 7

    Hike along the lake shore, past the homes of local families and nomadic herders, to reach the ger camp at   'Jankhai'. Overnight ger camp.

  • DAY 8

    Transfer by jeep back to   'Moron' town and fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight hotel.

  • DAY 9

    Free day in Ulaanbaatar for   'sightseeing' and shopping. Overnight hotel.

  • DAY 10

Lake Khovsgol Trek Map

Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Moron, the capital of Khovsgol province. Travel by jeep to Lake Khovsgol, a journey of approximately 5 hours, then start hiking from lakeside ger camp. In Khovsgol the airport transfers, accommodation, meals, camping equipment and trek staff are all included in the price of the tour. Hike Mongolia organise everything, including the return flight from Ulaanbaatar, and in Khovsgol the ger camp are responsible for all your services. The trek staff will be local people, not Hike Mongolia staff from Ulaanbaatar. This arrangement helps to keep the price down and you have the benefit of travelling with natives of Khovsgol region. The lakeside ger camp has a restaurant and shower / toilet facilities, but when wild camping on trek there are no washing facilities.
